Lux is a measurement of illuminance and a common misspelling of Luxe. Punk is for “who cares how it’s spelled. It’s cool”. In other words, Lux Punk is the perfect mix of Brilliance and Rebellion

I started Lux Punk to combine some of the things I love most i.e. costume and fashion, history and DIY. My name is Joanie Coyote. I am a theater costume designer, stand-up comic and college professor at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.

I was a punk rocker in the early 1980’s. Back then, no one wanted vintage or thrift clothes. It was considered something for poor people and most people wanted what was new and designer. Not us Punks. If you could buy it at the mall, we didn’t want it. Our goal was to scavenge for cool old pieces and take t-shirts and jackets and rip them, paint on them, pin them back together. It was fun and sometimes, getting dressed and figuring out what to put together was the best part of the day.

I want to provide a site that takes the humor and rebellion of those punk days with an eye toward today’s fashion and style. I’ll help provide some of the pieces in my Etsy shop and also give you some ideas so you can wear your stuff in a way that makes you feel great.
